Do we need to meet?

Usually not. I’m based in York, and working via email and telephone is quick, effective and it keeps costs down. Working this way, I have built successful relationships with clients from Macclesfield to Melbourne - all I need is a clear brief. top

How do I brief you?

Before I start a project, I need relevant background information (to give me something to work with) plus the following details (so that I can target the right audience):

  • What is the objective (generate sales, pass on information, get readers to make contact...)?
  • Who is the intended market (businesses, consumers, existing customers, prospective customers…)?
  • What 'tone of voice' would be appropriate (serious & professional, relaxed & informal, hard sell...)?

And remember, the best briefs get the best results. top

How will I receive my copy?

However you wish. Typically in MSWord format sent via email. top

What if I want to make changes?

My quote is fixed and includes any subsequent amendments that may be necessary – provided they are requested within 30 days and are within the context of the initial brief. top

What if the brief changes?

I use the brief to calculate my quote and carry out the work. If the brief changes after the work has been carried out, I will charge for the work already done and quote for the new work being requested. top

What if I don't like what you’ve written?

This has never happened but… there would be no fee, and ownership of all work would remain with me. top

How do you charge?

Rather than charge per hour, I usually give a quote for the entire project before work commences (so we all know the fee, however long it takes). This quote is fixed and includes any subsequent tweaking that may be necessary. Bear in mind that it’s harder to communicate something in 5 words than 500, so it is not simply a matter of charging ‘per word’. top

What am I paying for?

As an experienced copywriter working from my own premises, I provide the expertise you’d expect from a large marketing company plus all the convenience and personal attention of a first-rate freelancer. So, as well as fluent, powerful writing, my service incorporates research and creative thinking to ensure your marketing message makes a lasting impact. But you do not pay for my lunch breaks, holidays, desk space, PC, IT support, heating or any other overheads or downtime. top

Are you the cheapest?

No, but my prices are very competitive. Anyone charging less will most likely be providing a straightforward ‘writing service’, without any consideration of style or marketing objectives. So, if you think hiring a professional copywriter is expensive, try hiring an amateur! top

How do I pay?

If you are a new client and the quote is more than £400 I require an initial payment of 50% of the total fee before work commences. I will email you a final invoice once the project has been completed. Full payment is to be made within 14 days of the date of invoice. Ownership of all work remains with me until full payment has been received. You can pay either by cheque made payable to Ashley Hastings or by direct transfer into my bank (account details supplied on request). top

What about confidentiality?

All information is treated as confidential and I am happy to sign a confidentiality agreement if you wish. top

What do you know about my business?

It doesn’t matter. I have worked successfully with businesses from most sectors and, in each case, I approach the job from the perspective of a potential customer, not an industry insider. If background material is not provided, I research it myself. If I have any questions, I’ll ask you. top

Can I see some samples of work?

Can you help us with the design?

As a creative copywriter, I can provide concepts for marketing and advertising, but I am not a designer. I can, however, recommend some terrific graphic designers and web developers that I have worked with previously. top

How long will it take?

We’ll agree the timing before work commences. I organise my schedule around your needs, so I never keep you waiting and always deliver the results you want on time and on budget. top
